Framingham risk score

Risk of heart disease

Cardiovascular disease can now be predicted based on a variety of factors including age, blood lipids, smoking, blood pressure and more. These predictions rely on decades of research, in which researchers have tracked healthy individuals, documented their physical condition and health habits, and examined which of them have had various diseases over the years.

One of the world's best-known medical studies has been conducted among 5,000 residents of the town of Framingham in the United States in the span of 50 years. Based on residents' data and their state of health, the researchers developed a model (formula) called the Framingham model. This model calculates the risk of cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years.

What factors are included in the Framingham model:

The factors included in the risk calculation are: age, sex, blood sugar, blood cholesterol, HDL ("good" cholesterol), blood pressure and smoking.

What does the grade obtained in the Framingham model mean?

Once the data is entered, the risk is calculated as a percentage, for cardiovascular disease in the next ten years. For example, a 2% result indicates that out of 100 people with similar data to the entered data, it is likely that two will die or die of cardiovascular disease in the next ten years

Why is it important to check the risk of cardiovascular disease?

The risk factors included in the Framingham model are mostly altered by improving health habits: diet, smoking cessation and sports and drug therapy: balancing fats and sugars in the blood and reducing blood pressure. The model allows a person to calculate his or her personal risk of heart disease in the next ten years if one or more of the risk factors is reduced.
